I birthed my first baby at home with Rebecca in attendance. She is a very skilled midwife and enjoyable to have as part of the birth experience. She is extremely supportive of a mother's individual needs (which in my case meant minimal exams and freedom to do what felt right). I would recommend her services to anyone and I think birthing at her birthing suite is the perfect choice for someone who wants to have a natural birth in an environment other than the hospital but not at home. Love her...what more is there to say? :)

1. What helped you most when you gave birth?
Thinking of the millions of women who have given birth naturally all across the world and feeling that uniting sisterhood.
2. What was your spiritual experience of giving birth?
The indescribably intense love I had for my baby after giving birth naturally was amazing. This was my 3rd baby but my first natural birth. I love my first two children more than anything but it took a lot longer to adjust to them as newborns and feel the intense love I have for them now. With my third baby and my natural birth it was instinctual in a way I cannot describe. I was happy from the moment of birth through the next few months, like I was on a high. I never got depressed discouraged like I did with the first two. I felt like I had finally experienced birth the way God intended it to be for me.
3. Is there anything you would do differently?
I am expecting another baby this spring and I will be taking a hypnobirthing or hypnobabies class to help me relax and stay calm. I really think I could have a nearly painless birth if I practice and prepare for it.
4. What do you wish you had known before hand?
I wish I have known how amazing homebirth and natural birth were before I had any children. I wish I could go back and have my first 2 again so I could make better decisions for me and my baby.
5. If you could do it over again, what do you wish you could do the same?
Pretty much everything, I would only change the fact that I didn't take a natural childbirth class.

Ms Liu -

I had a homebirth with an independently practicing CNM in California. After a few years I gradually became more and more impressed that midwifery was(is) the path for me. I wanted to become a CPM, but after some research I decided to go for nurse-midwifery. My reasons are 1) I am also interested in becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, to give continuing care for the families I attend, 2) Nurse-Midwives are legal in every state, and who knows what I'll end up doing, 3) Nurse-Midwives tend to have better luck in getting paid by insurances, 4) I want to have hospital privileges so that if a mother needs or wants transfer to the hospital I can still attend her there, and 5) (a biggie!) the government will pay for my education as a CNM, not so with DEM or CPM.

BUT, I want to primarily attend homebirths! I know in CA this would not be a problem, but now I'm living in Utah. Will I be able to attend homebirths as a CNM, or is it next to impossible to find a backing physician? Also, as a CNM, will I have less freedom in homebirths than I would as a CPM? You said "Some have even went on to obtain their CPM in order to practice independently." This option sounds reasonable. If I am a CNM and a CPM, will I be able to practice independently, or would the status of CNM still bar me from this option?

Thank you.

Wow, this sounds familiar. Have you ever read the book. The Cry and the Covenant, by Morton Thompson? it is about Semmelweis and his studies of child bed fever. Anyway the book is awesome about the discovery of washing your hands before performing a vaginal exam on a woman. Apparently, during that period of time, doctors would be dissecting cadavers and without washing their hands would go directly into the birthing rooms and check the Moms. Many women dreaded having a baby, because they knew they would not come out of the hospital alive. The women that delivered at home, of course remained healthy. One of our plugs for home birth is that you are immune to your own germs in your own home. This is a must read for all midwives, aspiring midwives, doulas/anyone involved with birth and women.
