At Lake View Maternity, we believe that pregnancy and childbirth are normal and natural processes, not medical conditions. We respect the unique physical, emotional, and social aspects of each woman and her family.

We, as birth professionals, support natural childbirth with minimal intervention, and provide personalized maternity care, counseling, breast-feeding support, home and hospital labor support, birth readiness classes and homebirth services. Our goal at Lake View Maternity is for every woman to have the support she needs to achieve the birth she wants. By doing this we feel we can empower and strengthen woman and families one birth at a time. We want families to be educated so they can be in control of their birthing experience and achieve a safe and satisfying birth.

I am entirely committed to serving women and supporting them to achieve the safest, healthiest, and most empowering birth experience possible.

I witnessed my first birth at a young age, and have attended over 100 births as a midwife or assistant. After graduating from Midwives College of Utah, I earned my Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credential. Even though I have worked with many different midwives in several states, I consider Salt Lake my community.

My practice style is focused on prevention and maintaining optimal health, I believe this is a critical part of the Midwifery Model of Care. I treasure my role as a care provider for women, babies, and families.

Christine is a Traditional Midwife secializing in waterbirths, VBACs, twins, and breech births (when moms meet the low-risk criteria).

Christine began studying midwifery in 2005 after her own VBAC, under the midwife who attended her VBAC birth. She spent a short time at a Maternity Clinic in Davao, Philippines in 2008.

Sh has been twice published in Midwifery Today as an advocate of VBACs and as an advocate for unity among midwives. She is involved in BirthAction, an organization that strives to educate women about hurtful birth practices, and how to avoid primary and subsequent cesareans.

She believes that if we remove fear and unnecessary intervention from childbirth, women can experience beautiful and empowering births.

I have been a birth educator and doula since 1996, originally certifying through International Childbirth Education Association and Doulas of North America. I received my training in HypnoBirthing® in 2001 and am certified by the HypnoBirthing Institute. I am the founder of Utah Friends of Midwives (a consumer group of over 200 members working to promote the Midwives Model of Care). In 2004, I became a Certified Professional Midwife through the North American Registry of Midwives. I am licensed by the state of Utah.

Heather Johnston LDEM, CPM

Heather Johnston is the owner and primary midwife at BirthWise Maternity Care, LC. She is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and Licenced Direct-entry Midwife (LDEM). She graduated from the Utah Association of Community Midwives in 1995, as a Graduate Domicilary Midwife. She completed clinical training with an experienced midwife and began independent practice that same year.

She is a member of the Licenced Direct-entry Midwives Association of Utah and has served as President and Vice-President of the Utah Midwives’ Association. She is a member of the Licensed Direct-entry Midwife Rules Committee for the State of Utah and also serves on the Licensed Direct-entry Midwife Advisory Board.

In her thirteen years as a midwife she has assisted nearly 350 women as they have given birth at home.

Cathy has a passion for birth and babies that are a part of her earliest memories, and currently provides services for families who are interested in homebirth.

Her education in birth includes DONA (doula training), ALACE (labor assistant), The Farm (midwife assistant Level I and II), Birthing From Within (childbirth educator) and she is a graduate of Midwives College of Utah. She is a Certified Professional Midwife and a Licensed Direct-Entry Midwife and has attended over 250 births.

Cathy and her husband, Chuck, have 5 children and 8 grandchildren. They enjoy taking spontaneous trips together. She is grateful to be serving as a midwife; strengthening families by empowering women during their childbearing years.

I have my degree in Nursing from the University of Texas, and my Nurse Midwifery degree from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in Kentucky - the oldest Nurse Midwifery program in the United States.

I have extensive background in out-of-hospital births, having my own home-birth practice as a traditional midwife for ten years. Now I provide for women and families desiring birth center birth and tender care for all women and newborns.

I love nurse midwifery and caring for women in all aspects of their lives. I have a great respect for the strength of women and families. Some families want more out of their experience of birth.

Chris Miller has been practicing midwifery for almost 40 years.

Chris has served the home birth community in Utah since 1980 and has done births in most counties in Utah as well as Wyoming , Idaho and Nevada. Chris can work with women who would like to birth twins or breech position babies at home.

Chris works closely with a licensed midwife and together, they help each other provide the best of both worlds to their families.

Chris offers full service maternity care and birth services, and postpartum care for up to 8 weeks .

Presently, I have attended over 600 women in childbirth. Seven of those births have ended with C-sections. My transport rate is about 2%. Most of my transports are not a matter of life and death, but rather for pain relief; the women just get so tired that they transport for an epidural. Most complications can be dealt with at home but Cesareans are not available at home and require transport to a hospital. Most complications come with a warning.

At no time will I ever force a woman to stay home, even if there are no complications. If she thinks that she would be more comfortable in the hospital, then we go.

I have had experience dealing with breech, hemorrhage, baby in respiratory distress, shoulder dystocia, tight nuchal cord, compound presentation, bradycardia, 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree tears, hypertension, woman going in to shock, baby needing CPR, meconium staining, retained placenta, VBAC delivery, prolapsed cord, fetal distress and twins.

Pregnancy and childbirth involve every part of you. Your deepest feelings, hopes, fears, physical and practical needs, and your spiritual or religious beliefs can all affect your pregnancy and the birth of your child. I believe in you and in the birthing process. I have learned from experiences and education that most mothers have everything they need to bring a child into this world safely.

In the summer of 2002, I began training with Elizabeth Camp-Smith, a local midwife (and personal hero of mine), who has been attending births for 28 years. She has, all together, delivered more than 900 babies! I worked with her as an assistant through May 2006 attending over 100 births, one of which was a set twins, who were delivered safely at home. Elizabeth and I continue to assist each other at the deliveries we attend.

Suzanne Smith holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Midwifery from the Midwives College of Utah, a Bachelor degree in Human Biology from Stanford University, and was the first licensed direct-entry midwife in Utah.

She founded BetterBirth, LLC in 1994, and lives in Orem with her husband and two children. Suzanne habla español.

Tara Tulley is a Certified Professional Midwife and holds a Bachelors Degree from the Midwives College of Utah. Tara is dedicated to providing the safest possible care, while offering a loving, gentle environment. She believes strongly in parents rights to choose their birth place and care provider. Tara has also been an instructor for the American Red Cross, and currently holds certification in Neonatal Resuscitation, and CPR. Tara is a past president of the Utah Midwives Association(2005-2007) and is an advocate for preserving the art of midwifery. Tara has three children who were born at home and loves helping women have empowering births.

Since the birth of my first daughter in 1978 at a birth center in California, followed by the home births of my middle daughter and son, I have been committed to out-of-hospital births.

In February of 2004 I moved from Virginia to Salt Lake City and a month later I opened my practice, Holladay Women’s HealthCare.

In September 2008, I moved my practice to Murray, Utah and changed the name to Great Expectations Birth Care to reflect the new facility and expanded birth choices. I love having the opportunity to participate in births that are so “RIGHT”, both for me and the families I care for.

The concept of “women-centered care” is at the heart of my healthcare provider philosophy. I am an advanced nurse practitioner with training in obstetrics, gynecology, family planning and women’s health issues. As a certified nurse-midwife I can prescribe medication, make referrals to other healthcare providers if needed, as well as order any necessary laboratory or diagnostic testing.
